First the swirling winds of a tornado, then the rush of flood water. In 2008, back-to-back natural disasters hit Dike and New Hartford. Mark Fails, a long-time Landus Cooperative employee and the close-knit team sprang into action to help their community.

“Everyone came together, and it is was all hands on deck to help with the damage,” Mark said.

Teamwork is a value Landus Cooperative employees hold and Mark is no exception, having worked at the company for more than twenty years, serving as the Dike location Operations Superintendent for the last four. His responsibilities include ensuring chemical and fertilizer orders are fulfilled in a timely manner, overseeing daily grounds maintenance, assisting the sales team with anything they need, and training employees. None of these tasks are a one-man job and Mark attributes all success to the teamwork involved. “Our team focuses on cross-training people so they know all the tasks, that way one job is not dependent on one person,” he noted. “None of us can do this by ourselves; it’s about all of us working together to be better than yesterday.”

Operating in the agriculture industry brings about a set of new challenges every day, something Mark and the team are no strangers to. These challenges keep them growing in their daily work. “Everyone works together and learns together,” Mark mentioned. “We do what needs to be done and have as much fun as we can while getting the work accomplished.”

Facing and overcoming challenges is not an easy feat, so Mark makes sure he and the team get a chance to celebrate their victories. “When we can, we will get burgers and grill out or have a potluck. It is the little things that make a difference,” Mark stated. “There are new hurdles every day, some small and some more major like a natural disaster, but we strive to go above and beyond to satisfy our customer’s needs in every situation.”

Whether it is daily tasks or unforeseen circumstances, Mark and the rest of the Landus Cooperative team are committed to their customers and community.

“To all the job seekers out there, know you have to give 100% every day. That is what our customers deserve,” he added.
