Sec. Naig Visits Jefferson, Talks NAFTA

Grain Train Bound For Mexico Nafta Naig Visit 11 768X1024

This week, Landus Cooperative hosted Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Deputy Secretary of Ag, Julie Kenney at its Jefferson location. On Wednesday the pair visited to talk about the important role NAFTA plays in Iowa farmers’ businesses.

Photos from the visit are available here.

During the visit, Landus Cooperative finished picking up a 1.5 million bushel corn pile which had been under a tarp cover since harvest last year. The grain was moved into the “house,” or cement elevator, to be loaded on a train Thursday bound for Mexico.

Landus Cooperative ships a 110-car train to Mexico every 6 days. Since the beginning of its fiscal year, the cooperative has moved approximately 15 million bushels south of the border via train. Of that, about 2 million originated from the Jefferson location.

Landus Cooperative thanks the Secretary and Deputy Secretary for their support of trade opportunities and the entire Jefferson team who helped coordinate the visit. The group noted that Jefferson is a sort of “Greene County Export Hub” as grain is exported from the elevator and SoyChlor is exported from the production facility.

Several news groups joined the group for the tour. Stories from the event are below.
