Importance of Herbicide Longevity

Extended Weed Control: Adequate longevity allows herbicides to kill emerging weed seedlings for a longer period, reducing early-season competition with crops and minimizing yield losses.

Weed Resistance Management: Using residual herbicides with multiple modes of action is a key strategy for preventing and managing herbicide-resistant weed populations, such as waterhemp.

Application Flexibility: Sufficient residual activity provides a wider, more flexible window for follow-up post-emergence herbicide applications, which is helpful given variable spring weather conditions.

Long-term Management: Effective control of weeds, especially those that produce thousands of seeds per plant, prevents the replenishment of the soil weed seedbank, which has long-term benefits for field manageability.

Key Factors Maintaining Residual Herbicide Activity

Soil moisture is critical to all process involved with soil applied herbicides. Soil applied herbicides must be placed in the proper region of the soil, by mechanical incorporation, irrigation, or natural rainfall, where weeds are germinating or growing in order to be effective.

In addition, they need to be present in soil solution in order for the herbicide to be absorbed by root, shoots or germinating seeds of weeds.

Excessive moisture can leach herbicides, particularly those with higher water solubility, moving them too deep in the soil profile, away from the weed germination zone.

Too little moisture can reduce herbicide efficacy by reducing their ability to control weeds.

GroPre™ is a soil adjuvant designed to hold soil applied chemistry in the targeted area allowing for more consistent weed control.

Increase Absorption: improves herbicide by increasing the adsorption of soil residual herbicides in the upper soil profile.
